The mobile application development industry is growing significantly. This is only because the sales rate of smartphones is much higher than that of desktop or laptop PCs. Studies have revealed that smartphone sales per year are more than triple the number of desktop PC sales per year. Google has emerged as a leading search engine processing over a billion search requests per day. Google is already a dominant player when it comes to desktop PCs, but that’s not the case with smartphones. The smartphone market is just emerging and on the other hand Google would never want its dominance to be threatened. This is why Google has ventured into the next smartphone market with the Android operating system.
Android’s unique selling proposition is open source. A closer look at the scenario will reveal that the mobile application experience is far inferior to that of desktop applications. Google was the first to identify and recognize the root cause of this. According to Google, mobile application developers were subject to a lot of restrictions and this limited their creativity. The restriction on application developers is best exemplified by Apple’s strategy of not approving third-party programs. Most likely it is because Apple fears that these applications could replace the built-in features of the iPhone. On the other hand, Android is an open source platform that facilitates application developers to create Android applications without paying any license fees. Android’s policy is such that it motivates developers to develop new applications by combining information from different sources such as other smartphones and the Internet.
Most smartphones run on a closed system. This means that applications that have manufacturer approval can only be installed on the smartphone device. To take advantage of this approval it becomes mandatory for the application developer to obtain code signing certificates. The process of obtaining code signing certificates is time-consuming and expensive. This is not the case with Android application development. Once the application developer has developed an Android application, they can install it instantly. Since developing Android applications saves time, money and resources, developers believe that developing Android applications is cheaper than developing applications for other operating systems and platforms.
Android applications pose a threat to mobile network providers and device manufacturers. Text messages when offered for free by Google Voice, an Android application. This implies that Android-based phone users should not use the text messaging service offered by the mobile network provider. Android applications are such that they can totally change the functionality of the phone. Manufacturers want their phones to be unique and not changed according to the whims and fantasies of others.
Motorola and Verizon have launched Android-based phones and this has been a big boost to the popularity of Android, resulting in increased demand for Android application development services.
